Blackjack Resources

Blackjack always reminds me of my youth — playing for 10p and torn knuckles on the back of the school bus. Still, blackjack is the only casino game where the clever punter can make a killing — literally!

Several years ago a number of Las Vegas casinos were taken for hundreds of thousands of dollars by several teams of MIT students who collaborated on one of the most elaborate stings since the invention of the ankle worn computerised card counter.

For those who are interested in learning how the MIT students punished the Las Vegas Blackjack tables there is a good article on Wired that provides some detailed insights into the tricks but I’ll give a summary of how it was done here.

Previous attempts to count cards at the casino had one major disadvantage: it was a lone activity. The suspicious looking player would be quickly scanning all the cards on the table and trying to work out if the types of cards left in the shoe were favourable, the amount of concentration required was very easy for the casino staff to detect. With innovations in electronic the tracking of spent cards was made simpler over the years by devices which people would strap to their bodies in an attempt to conceal their advantage, but the casinos again got wise to this and introduced device detection and better training to their staff to help identify the cheats.
